Florence - An Introduction


If its artwork you want to see, then get yourself over to Florence for a week because its famous for its glorious artwork as well as her cutural heritage, and Florence was a major player during the Renaissance and during the Humanist movements. Florence is slightly small but boy is she a beautiful city and a very popular city for tourists and ex-patriots from all of the world.

The city centre in Florence has an historic center, which is most illustrative of Florence. The road system of the city was first designed by the Romans and it is known as the cardo and decumano system. In the historic part of the city one comes across the mammoth imposing structure of the Duomo, with its Brunelleschian Cupola, that adds great magnificance to the citys skyline.

The city is well preserved from medieval times and has retained its medieval road network, lined with magnificent palaces with the likes of Palazzo Strozzi and Palazzo Medici Riccardi, which were owned by the powerful families of Florence. Although finding ones way around Florence is not at all difficult, once one can dissect the different 5 districts of the city and the four sections of its centre.
