San Giovanni:
The name San Giovanni originates from the Patron of Florence, St.
John the Baptist, and the Baptistery was built in his honour. This
area covers the majority of the city centre and has become the posh
part with designer shops and boutiques in most of the popular streets
like via Calzaiuoli. The Tribunale di Firenza (housed in the Complesso
di San Filippo Neri) as well as the University are located in this
part of the city centre.
Santa Maria Novella:
Santa Maria Novella derived its name from the church in the
area - the Santa Maria Novella church, which was a dominican Basilica
and was previously a very important church around the time of the
middle ages. They called the train station in the area also Santa
Maria Novella and it was designed by Michelucci in the 1930s.
Around the corner from the station is the Basso Fortress, which
is always busy with conferences and exhibitions taking place there.
If you thought the area of San Giovanni was bad for posh boutiques,
then come to this section of the centre and especially around via
Tornabuoni where the street is famous for being the home to the
top designer stores and boutiques like Versace and the local designer
Ferragamo. There is also a lovely green oasis to relax in at the
Parco delle Cascine.
Santa Croce:
The church Santa Croce gave its name to this section of the city
centre. Its a medieval Franciscan basilica. A ninth century National
Central library is also to be found in this quaint part of central
Florence.
